Odlučila sam to provjeriti.

Odlučila sam testirati Baby Tulu Free-to-Grow (gore lijevo; model Mystic Meadow), Ergoababy Adapt Cool Air Mesh (gore desno; model Pearl Grey), Ergobaby Adapt (dolje lijevo; model Azure Blue) i Baby Tulu Free-to-Grow Coast, model s mrežicom (dolje desno; model Moood).

Svi ti rezultati mjerenja temperatura površina panela odražavaju prozračnost i toplinsku vodljivost materijala nosiljke.

! Ako nošenjem i kožiranjem (eng. skin-to-skin) želite spustiti bebi temperaturu zbog bolesti trebate se skinuti do pasa i bebu skinuti samo u pelenu. Ukoliko temperatura prelazi 39ºC temperaturu skidajte i lijekovima i nazovite dežurnu ambulantu!

Testing: Mesh carriers

(Carriers with mesh panels).

In the summer, a common question is which carrier is coolest. Mesh carriers are extremely popular, but at the same time skeptics raise their eyebrows suspiciously, because such carriers are “made of plastics”.

Are they really cooler or is it just a marketing trick?

I decided to check it out.

I decided to test the Baby Tula Free-to-Grow (top left, Mystic Meadow print), Ergoababy Adapt Cool Air Mesh (top right, Pearl Gray), Ergobaby Adapt (bottom left, Azure Blue) and Baby Tula Free- Grow Coast, model with mesh (bottom right, Moood print).

For any meaningful testing, controlled conditions are required and the recognition and removal of all factors that may affect final results are required. Of course, a precise measuring device is also required.

My initial idea was to walk one hour with each carrier and after the walks to photograph and compare sweaty spots on shirts. 😀

Method

I put on each of the four carriers with my baby and made the first thermal camera shot within half a minute, then made another shot after exactly 10 minutes to see how much we heated up. I was at home, at stable 25 ºC.  I had 20 minutes pauses between carriers. The baby was wearing a cloth diaper and a cotton under-shirt, and I had a cotton short-sleeved T-shirt. I shot with a precise FLIR Thermovision Camera.

Recording

“Ordinary” Ergobaby Adapt: At only 10 minutes, the temperature that could be read from the surface of the cargo panel jumped from 25.3 ºC to 33.2 ºC! I have to admit that I started to be hot already after the first minute.

“Ordinary” Ergobaby Adapt (from left to right): At just 10 minutes, the temperature jumped from 25.3ºC to 33.2ºC!

After about twenty minutes of pause, I repeated the recording with the mesh, summer version of the same carrier and got a very interesting and unexpected result. Almost nothing has changed in the 10 minute interval! By not even a whole degree of ºC, the temperature rose only on the part which is just above the belt where there is no 3D mesh.

Ergobaby model with 3D mesh (from right to left): Almost nothing has changed in the 10 minute interval!

Though at first glance the mesh looks like plastic, the 3D mesh of Ergobaby carrier indeed has a cooling effet. Will the softer and thicker mesh of Tula’s Coast carriers give similar result?

I was expecting the “ordinary” Tula Free-to-Grow to heat just as Ergo Adapt. Luckily, I have been wrong. The temperature rises for only half a degree in the upper part of the carrier, and in the lower it rose for a full degree because my sun obviously filled the diaper.

Baby Tula FTG (from left to right): The temperature rose only for half a degree in the upper part of the carrier and in the lower by a full degree ºC because my sun, visibly, filled the diaper (left). 🙂

Since I was so suprised by the „ordinary“ Tula, I expected that the mesh Tula could have the same or maybe a slightly better result. I was surprised at the temperature falling (!) for half a degree during the 10 minute interval, but at the time of taking the second shot, my son began breastfeeding in Tula Coast.

Tula FTG Coast (from left to right): Surprisingly, the temperature has fallen for half a degree after 10 minutes! On the right footage, my son just started breastfeeding.

It is noticeable that breastfeeding in just 5 minutes raised the temperature by 1.5 ºC. However, this is a physical activity that warms the carried baby, and the person who is carrying.

What is also affecting the rise of temperature is holding the arm on the panel, wearing artificial materials, the increased physical activity, warming of the carrier in the sun, the poor air ventilation…

What also affects the change of temperature is holding the hand on the panel: the fingerprint is clearly visible (left). It is obvious that physical activity, like breastfeeding (right), raises the temperature by 1.5 ºC in just 5 minutes.

All of these surface temperature measurement results reflect the airiness and thermal conductivity of the carrier material. So, in mesh carriers, the baby is undoubtedly more comfortable on a hot summer day, but the temperature between the person carrying and the baby does not change significantly with the choice of the carrier. I just have to point out here that if your baby starts to warm up because of the poor choice of carrier material, our body just because it is bigger, will take over the baby’s warmth and cool it. We will therefore get the feeling that in a particular carrier, it suddenly became very hot, even though only the straps and waistband are on our body. (Our body can not effectively take the baby’s heat if we have clothes made of synthetic materials, or if we are dressed in layers!)

! If you want to do skin-to-skin to lower your baby’s temperature due to illness, you need to undress from the waist up and baby should have only a diaper on. If the temperature exceeds 39ºC, use medication to lower it and call the on-duty doctor!

I was surprised by the results of this little test, so I also tested the wraps and slings.
